One of the hardest things for me about being entrepreneur is not the isolation but the lack of routine. When you have an employer to answer to, you have set tasks to deliver to achieve someone else’s targets, and timelines and goals.

Your HAVE a boss.

When you work for you, you ARE your boss.

When you have no other employees either – there is no one to look over your shoulder and your delivery is about you. Everything you achieve is on you.  Whether you are distracted easily is on you.  Whether you can 100% focus on the task and get it done on your own timeframes is on YOU.

I remember my ex-husband sharing that when he left military after a long career, he had the same struggle. He lacked the direction and structure of being told what to do within what timeframe.

Suddenly there was no structure, nor expectation around him. He was used to being told what to do when and how and now he didn’t have that.

I hear retiring people find the same problem. They structure of what to do and when and how it is to be done, is now all gone. It’s all down to you.

TIME IS OUR MOST VALUABLE COMMODITY

So, what’s the antidote?

I hate structure, I don’t even like routine. So, I had to find another way to manage myself.

Boundaries aren’t my favourite thing either. I had to face an element of people-pleasing that I didn’t know I had. Everything from saying no to catching up with friends on a “work day”, through to learning to not react to demands around the house but to write them on a list for the time when I am NOT working in my business.  They weren’t always urgent anyway, they just needed to be done.

THE 168 HOUR WEEK

Did you know there were 168 hours in every week?  Yup, 168 hours.

I realised a couple of years back when I was juggling a part time career and growing my business. I was looking after a large home and its accompanying gardens by myself. I was focussed on my health and ofcourse I wanted to still spend time with people I loved to hang out with.

Something had to give.

Everyone gets the same number of hours to play with every week. But it’s how wisely you spend these hours that matters.  This exercise below helped me to know where I waste time. Demonstrated where I was productive and let my free-range heart know that there is plenty of time for fun, play and well, free time.  I decided whether the time and task needed to be planned into a calendar or whether I could be free-range about it and just make sure it got done.

 

What do I need to prioritise each week for my 168 hours

Business – 28 hours – All planned into my calendar as tasks on set days

  • School admin – 2 hours
  • Marketing, Blogs, sales – 10 hours
  • Class delivery – 8 hours
  • Social media responding – 4 hours
  • Business study – 4 hours

Career – 30 hours – All planned into my calendar as a commitment

  • Working time – 21 hours
  • Travel time – 9 hours

Personal – 96 hours

  • Sleep – 63 hours – free range
  • Exercise and movement – 6 hours – planned
  • Household chores and home care – 4 hours – planned
  • Food prep, shopping, eating – 5 hours – planned
  • Socialising with friends/family – 4 hours – free range
  • Meditation/Journaling – 4 hours – free range
  • Personal growth study – 4 hours – planned

Free time – 14 hours – totally unplanned

  • Downtime doing nothing like watching tv
  • Reading a book
  • Chatting on the phone/ text messaging
  • Having a long bath
  • Scrolling through social media

I’ve learned a lot about working for myself this past year.  These days I keep my diary as free as I can so I can enjoy 4 days’ work and 3 days off.  I’m deliberate about when I catch up with friends, what creeps into my diary and I plan my time a lot better these days.  Life still interrupts with needed trades people or door knocks at times.  Then there is time allocated for the committees I volunteer on and other stuff I need to get done. I am generous with my sleep.  I give myself 9 hours every night. Some days I sleep less but I don’t set an alarm.

Even with a solid plan in place, there were some days I would feel the fear and panic in my body. I would question myself. Question my ability.  Questioned whether I had what it took to have the success I desired.  I do.

TAKE A PAUSE

Today I give myself grace and kindness. I am doing the best I can. When I look at what I have achieved since leaving a secure Govt job less than a year ago I can see it all. I have written and successfully launched a best-selling book (Shameless plug for the Book available on Amazon now – Thank God, He’s Gone: The Smart Woman’s Guide to Getting Back your Personal Power and Reclaiming your Confidence).  I have continued to grow my business with new students joining us monthly. I created and successfully launched a brand-new training course with another in the pipeline. I have appeared on numerous Podcasts. I am packed up my home after a decade of my family living here, downsized and moved.

If you are struggling with your own time management, and how to fit it all in. Perhaps a 168-hour week audit will benefit you?  Take ten minutes, pen and paper and start to map out where does your time go.  Sometimes being mad-ass busy cant be helped.  It’s just life and how we fit everything in but a time audit was a great exercise for me to realise I had plenty of time available, I was simply wasting it in all the wrong places.
